Little did Gil Coats know in 1947 that the wheel-holder he designed for changing tractor tires would become the forerunner of the most popular automatic tire changer machines ever sold.
Coats' original goal was simply to reduce the risk of pinching holes in inner tubes when changing tires on farm machinery. In partnership with Jack Hennessy, however, Coats refined his early design. The resulting Iron Tireman went on to shape the automatic tire changer industry and set standards for safety, quality, and convenience.
Keeping pace with technology is the COATS hallmark. With the arrival of tubeless tires in the 1950's, COATS changers transformed the industry with their rugged reliability. COATS led the way again when alloy wheels gained popularity by introducing the first American-made Rim Clamp® changers, which continue to set benchmarks for quality and performance.
