The toolholder determines the angle of attack (positive or negative). The insert must be shaped appropriately for clearance and determines if it can be used upside down. Inserts and toolholders must match. Radius affects surface finish, maximum depth or cut, and insert service life. The smaller the radius the larger maximum depth of cut but the shorter the service life. Positive rake inserts generally produce better surface finishes.
